This week’sDoctor Who , " The Story and the Engine " , featuresAriyon Bakareas a occult Samuel Barber who has pick out over the Dr. ’s ( Ncuti Gatwa ) barbershop in business district Lagos and keep the customers prisoner , forcing them to tip him stories that fire his engine . Bakare ’s turn is oracular , sinister , unpredictable , and one of the most charismatic villains in the series due to the layers he bring to his performance . He had guested on the series before under layers of prosthetics , but with his boldness no longer hidden here , he can show a full compass of emotion as befit his tragical character . The BBC free an interview with him on his role – here are some of the high spot :
How did you get to be cast in " Doctor Who"?It come as a wonderful surprisal as they approached me like a shot for the part . My agent call with the offer to return to the Whoniverse . I was distressed that they had forget I had been part of the franchise before , but then they remember I was in full prosthetic as Leandro . After my experience play Leandro , I was delighted to tread back into that reality . It was an instantaneous yes .
Were you a fan of the show before?Yeah , I was a fully grown devotee as a kid . I would collect " Doctor Who " scorecard that you ’d get in cereal box . I loved the Daleks , of course , but I was also a huge sports fan of the Cybermen .
What do you think induce ' Doctor Who ' so special ? " Doctor Who " is genius because it literally built change into its story with the whole regeneration concept . More than being quintessentially British , it always stays fresh with Modern side , new companion , and new originative team . I love how it can be whatever it wants – one calendar week , you might get a historical episode , then suddenly it ’s a creepy thriller , then boom – full - on sci - fi the next . But what make it stand out is its hopefulness about people . At its heart , the show believes we can be better and that compassionateness and intellectual matter more than violence . It ’s this awe-inspiring premix of wild imagination , hope , and unremitting reinvention that keeps rooter come back for decades .
What was it like working with Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu? You have two unbelievable young actors of their propagation . I can only imagine that stepping into the shoes of these iconic roles , a mainstay of British culture , is quite a intimidating feat . Yet together , they finagle to do it with an effortless " joie de vivre , " making it forward-looking and accessible to a unexampled generation of Whovians . I have sex them . Their interpersonal chemistry on screen is a pleasure to watch . Varada ’s smile can mellow any spectator ’s heart . Now , intermingle that with Ncuti ’s card and magic spell , you create instant screen door magic .
The TARDIS lands in Lagos , a place the show has never been before ; how was this to film? What I love about this installment is its cultural profundity . Inua ’s script is steeped in Nigerien cultivation ; it tells a story about storytelling and the line of descent of story – the might they hold to heal , educate , and inspire . The Nigerian cultural constituent is unquestionable ; the barbershop serves as a hub of conversation where these stories are shared . Inua bright employs sure-enough Nigerian folktales , those bedtime tarradiddle we all heard as children , and create a timeless piece that is Nigerian in essence but cosmopolitan in charm .
For me , it demonstrates that all fib are significant ; stories are not diminished by polish , race , or geography . Good storytelling is simply that – no one narrative is less relevant than another . In the terminal , it remind us that whether across galaxies or cultures , our shared stories are what really make us human .
What else can audiences await to see from this episode?Hair , Lot of hair .
What would it be if you had to describe the episode in one word or phrase?A meter - flex Cultural Ancestral collision .
