MD Who film director Makalla McPherson on what viewers can expect from " The Story and the Engine , " joining the " WHOniverse , and much more .
This workweek ’s episode ofDoctor Who , " The Story and the Engine " , is the most visually telling in the season for recreating a street in Lago , Nigeria , and the local barbershop that becomes the battleground between The Doctor ( Ncuti Gatwa ) and the mysterious barber ( Ariyon Bakare ) who wedge his customer to secernate him narration to flow his plan as he cuts their haircloth . Speaking with the BBC , DirectorMakalla McPhersonoffered some insight into what looker can require , what it was like join the " WHOniverse , " and more :
What can audiences look from this episode?Audiences can expect something bold , poetical , and deeply rooted in culture . We take the Doctor out of his usual humankind and bring him to Nigeria – which forthwith shifts the energy and opens up new possible action . Inua Ellams wrote a unfeignedly unique script with a very distinct tone .
The sequence is tight - pace , filled with fertile cultural references , and led by a bright ensemble cast – including the incredibleAriyon BakareandSule Rimi . Tonally , it dances between worked up liaison and uncertainty , have-to doe with on themes of friendship , identity operator , and community . There ’s also a dark , spirited undercurrent that gives the story real weight .
It was a joy to bring to life , and I ’m so thankful to the team who made it materialise . There were definitely some challenge in the shoot , but everyone came together with passion and care , and I ’m fantastically thankful for that .
Can you tell us about the process of creating this episode? My start head was always the script – sympathize the story beat , the character , the aroused prickle , and asking what we could show rather than tell . Most of the installment takes stead in a single location – a Samuel Barber shop – with an ensemble of eight strong actors . So the challenge was : how do we keep this dynamical , fresh , and visually piquant ?
We used a tool call Previs ( previsualisation technology ) , which let me step into the hardening well-nigh using a 3D headset . That meant I could block scenes , map out out tv camera movement , understand scale , and decide where props and legal action would go , all before the set was build . It give way us a exonerated pattern and allow us to be bold with how we used the blank .
Working with designerPhil Simswas also key – he was implemental in helping contribute the ethnic world of the episode to biography , with genuineness and mental imagery .
How was it to work on " Doctor Who"?I absolutely loved it . I had an incredible metre . I ’ve been a vast fan ofRussell T Daviesfor old age , so to get together with him was a real perquisite . He was supportive and generous from the start . I remember him suppose , " Every episode is like a photographic film — make it your own . Put your stamp on it . " That exemption to be expressive while still honouring the legacy of Doctor Who was amazing .
The scale of the output is phenomenal . walk into Bad Wolf Studios and seeing the dream behind the sets , the craft , the vaporous number of people work inexhaustibly behind the view – it was veneration - inspiring . And despite its size , the show really feel like a family . Everyone is working towards the same destination : to make something extraordinary .
How was it shape with Ncuti and Varada? It was a material pleasure . Varada is such a talented actress – thoughtful , open , and really collaborative . She brought so much depth to her role . And Ncuti is just galvanic . He ’s determined to make this Doctor his own , and he brings real care and precision to every choice .
As a director , your character is to support them , guide when needed , but mostly create a space where they can fall . They were both clear to collaboration and committed to rescue something special . It was a joyousness to share the space with them .
If you could summarize up your episode in one Christian Bible or phrase , what would it be?Poetic .
