Writer Inua Ellams offers some interesting insights into Doctor Who : " The Story and the Engine " , which sees the Doctor and Belinda in Nigeria .
This calendar week ’s installment ofDoctor Who , " The Story and the railway locomotive " , is raw writerInua Ellams ' first hand for the series and a special episode in many means . It ’s the first episode of the series write entirely through the lens of a culture other than Britain as the Doctor and Belinda stop by in Lagos , Nigeria , to face a dark barber and his customers - turned - prisoner who have to feed him story . Ellams was a child in his native Nigeria and grew up watchingDoctor Whothere before immigrating to the UK , and is now an acclaimed playwright moving into screenwriting . The BBC releasedan interview with Ellamsabout the upcoming episode – here are some of the highlights :
What is the unconscious process of compose an episode of Doctor Who ? Is it unlike from what you ’ve done before ?
The turnover time is fast . A play takes me five or six years to save , but we had to do this in a comparatively short time – in about a year . It ’s also very different from writing a steady play , when much of the information and storytelling come out through dialogue . You have to think pictorially . It took me some time to really churn down into that . I had really slap-up playscript editor , especially David Cheung , who worked with me diligently across the book . Russell ’s huge noesis and experience and comment was , without a question , unreasoningly important to writing it .
I really like figure out with Russell . There was something the former showrunner sound out to me , Chris Chibnall , which I call up is unfeigned : " Doctor Whois a sci - fi and repugnance for eight - year - olds , but also for all ages . " I kept that in mind . What would terrify an eight - year - old , but what ’s also fun and exciting ? How do you honor as much of what has get along before , whilst creating new thing for a novel generation ? It was great to grapple with , and I had so much fun .
What can you tease about the installment you ’ve written ?
It ’s entirely set in mostly one location . The moral of the story is to give credit where it ’s due . And I took that little idea and lucubrate it , and really drew it out . It is a Brobdingnagian story , but also a very simple one that sit on a pile of societal history . It ’s one localization , a great deal of fun , a lot of mythology write into it , but a new myth too .
The Buddy Cop Dynamic of The Doctor and Belinda
What was it like spell for the Doctor and Belinda ?
Ncuti and Varada brought so much pleasure and tenderness to the script I had written . Early in the draught , I render to make fun of the fact that he ’s call off the Doctor and she ’s a nursemaid , I tried to play out a sort of buddy - cop relationship , but I apace realize there was much more at dramatic play , and something deeper between them .
The series start off with Belinda determined to get home base , the Doctor trying everything he can to get her home , and the defeat all that make . There ’s a displacement in this . Compared to other companions , Belinda does n’t need to go on adventures . She make love her workplace , she wants to do her work ; she ’s thrown into this adventure . Most companions decide to go with The Doctor but Belinda does n’t have a selection . Keeping that in focus really corroborate the decisions I made about how the characters babble to each other .
If you could draw your sequence in one word or musical phrase , what would it be ?
It ’s a call to artists and creatives to always give deferred payment where it ’s due .
doc Who : The Story and the Enginepremieres Saturday on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK andDisney+outside the UK .
