Saturday Night Live legion Jack Black and SNL ’s writers / cast flexed their comedic brawn and bring some serious satiric heat this weekend .
This weekend ’s edition of NBC’sSaturday Night Livehad a lot going for it as showtime go about . HostJack Blackhad gotten the newsworthiness that his new movieMinecraftwas blow past opening weekend loge business office first moment ( even after some brutal early reviews ) – always a unspoiled thing . On the SNL side , the long - linear , late - night live sketch drollery & euphony series found itself making headlines throughout the week over question marks surround how last calendar week ’s musical guest , rural area singerMorgan Wallen , conk the show at the end of the dark and his follow - up social media post .
It was n’t that either Black or SNL felt like they had anything to prove – just the opposite . This weekend ’s show was more like Black and SNL flexing their comedic musculus by fail all in hard on every single second of every individual sketch . This weekend , the sketches worked because they made them work – and made you find like you were lack out if you were n’t willing to give yourself over to what they were offering . channelize into the weekend , Black share how anxious he was to host . If he was , then shore to him for being able to transmit it into his craft . More than just " live , " this weekend ’s show feltalive .
Saturday Night Live 50: SNL Random Thoughts & Personal Highlights
Though I could easily drop a whole ton of word of honor on how every sketch smash , I ’m not certain you ’re looking for a 10,000 - word pronunciamento on this weekend ’s SNL . Instead , here ’s a rundown of some of the sketches that stuck in our brains even after the show wrapped .
" duty Trump Cold Open":James Austin Johnson ’s Trump might be the most well - snipe take SNL has had so far , and it hold back fuck off better week after week . Mike Myershas done an amazing job crafting a more precise , yet also more manic , take on Elon Musk . Bonus points for the Tesla V , the self - vandalizing model , and for hitting with the first of two Wallen knife twists .
" One Uppers " : reckon it ’s a " Debbie Downer " sketch – but alternatively of it being one dispirit mortal make for the total group down , it ’s a group render to proudly one - up each in an escalating round of virtue sign . And then , about midway through , the assumption does n’t even count because now it ’s just Black and the cast have fun one - up each other with their facial reactions while try not to break-dance .
" Flamin ' Hot Commercial " : Chester Cheetah is the representative of ground as a frenzied , red - faced Black regrets his decision to apply Flamin ’s Hot Preparation H directly to his anus . What more do you call for to know ? Side note : I do n’t get laid how Black can get his face that red and sweaty and still be witting or not suffering a seizure or stroke – the dude really sold the thought that his butt was on fervor .
" Weekend Update " : Excellent . A fucking firecracker from top to bottom . Colin JostandMichael Checame out with their comedic clenched fist taped up , ready for a combat – and they didnotdisappoint . Between the Cold Open and " Weekend Update , " it ’s watch crystal light that Trump and Musk are n’t scare them off . Oh , and they also give us the second Wallen knife twist of the dark .
But it did n’t end there . The Couple You Ca n’t Believe Are Together ( Marcello Hernández , Jane Wickline ) yield to discuss healthy relationships . Hernández and Wickline have craft what might be my favorite " Weekend Update " guests because they effectivelymaintain their characters ' differences while sacrifice us enough credible insight into why it makes sense that they would be together .
But for me , the highlight of " Weekend Update " – and possibly of the night – wasEgo Nwodimstopping by to pitch herself to host the White House Correspondents ' Dinner by promising to roast the genuine dinner itself . Full revealing ? I was n’t sold on the premise when it first roll out – only to be reminded that Nwodim is a comedic genius who can work magic when hold the spotlight . Give her all the flowers – she more than realize them .
Once " Ms. Eggy " had the mic in deal and the spotlight on her , there was no holding back – with the crowing moment at hired hand when the consultation proved just how into what " Ms. Eggy " was say they were when they shouted back , " shit " when she permit the interview fill in the blank about what men are n’t . For a better appreciation of the instant , go back and watch not just Nwodim ’s chemical reaction / response but also how Jost and Che reply . That was another instance of how live television system can bring some wondrous comical import that just ca n’t be script .
" Bass Lake " : Big Ricky and the Minnows ( Black , Kenan Thompson , andAndrew Dismukes ) are look to cram – they just were n’t expecting all of that basso . Black does an excellent job at slow - construct his frustrations as the stage overflows with bass histrion – butHeidi Gardner ’s bass voice player with the flaming amp military issue was the sketch’sheadline - grabber for me .
" Goth Kid on holiday " : What started off looking like a legit commercial became a melodious sketch where a reggae duo ( Kenan ThompsonandEgo Nwodim ) propose an ode to all of the goth and emo tyke " coerce " to vacation with their family . On paper , it ’s a funny enough construct – but betweenMichael Longfellow ’s boor kid and Black going the My Chemical Romance route , this was another case of how excellent writing and an all - in commitment from the cast can make any sketch study – and this one run above and beyond .
