Futurama and Overwatch Star Feodor Chin on Thriving on His Acting Versatility

Bleeding Cool : When you begin your acting career , what made you resolve to incorporate voiceover work as part of it ?

That ’s an interesting interrogation . After I graduated from UCLA , I returned home to San Francisco for a bit , because like many 20 - yr - olds who are unsealed about how to get down their careers , the pick of potentially live at rest home rent - destitute was a picayune too surd to pass up . I started in San Francisco , and you could make a livelihood as an actor there . There ’s a palmy theater community and lots of commercial-grade work . There are industrials , occasional picture show or TV show that might come through . There ’s also a tidy sum of voiceover work , and so when I first signed with a San Francisco agent , they sent everything for you with commercial message , TV shows , and a lot of voiceover stuff . That ’s how I first got my start in voiceover . Some of my first jobs were credibly radio spots and industrials , and my first video game was a secret plan bid ' New Legends ' ( 2002 ) . This is how long ago it was . It was one of the first titles for a unexampled platform at the time call the Xbox [ laughs ] .

Did you ever think in your wildest dream that it would have been sustainable ? Is it just something you integrate into your versatility and paradigm in your workplace ?

For any actor , you have dream of maybe acquire honor and being on magazine covers . But more realistically , I call back one of my dreams was just to be a working role player . I think I did think that it would be possible to make a sustainable livelihood out of this . I certainly did n’t think I conceive of how exactly that would look . I can tell you , getting to do something like ' Overwatch ' that became such a phenomenon , I certainly did not fancy that . It ’s been a real approval , for sure .

Was there a particular project that digest out to you from your video game filmography ? ' Overwatch ' was one of your most meaning notches , for sure , but was there one that you think remain firm out for the right reason or weirdest reasons ?

for sure one that jump out is I got to play Master Splinter in ' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : Out of the Shadows ' ( 2013 ) , the telecasting plot there . That might have been one of the first prison term I got to play an iconic quality from my childhood . That was a veridical dainty , for sure .

It ’s funny that you name the ' Ninja Turtles ' because I saw you had another bigger character taking over Leo Wong from Billy West in ' Futurama . ' There ’s been this ongoing issue with Hollywood and delegacy . There seems to be two schools of thought on this , where some believe actors should act , pushing back on the whitewashing narrative . How did it feel to take over that part , built on that ' Futurama ' legacy , and amount in as late as you have ?

Yeah , utterly . I can speak to that . Like you said , and it ’s true , I think most doer feel that in an idealistic world , any actor would get to dally any role . That is part of the job : you get to inhabit these different characters . As we have intercourse , we do n’t live in that ideal world , and we experience in a cosmos in which there have been , maybe historical …

Whitewashing ?

Yeah , where certainly the same chance are not afforded to citizenry based on peel color or gender . Since we live in that reality , it is middling to have a more veritable theatrical performance . Certainly with ' Futurama ' , when the recasting came about , it was middling intimidating , but I differentiate you , Billy could not have been more benignant about it . Billy is such a talent , as they all are on that cast , that they do such a not bad business with the parts that they do . He was certainly benignant about croak the Mickey Charles Mantle , and I did get the chance on a couple of episode to record live with everyone in the studio apartment . That was certainly a treat to get to catch everybody oeuvre , and those guys are legendary [ laughs ] .

sure , with the pandemic , many more people are comfortable recording their lines and performing remotely . That was my fall out - up question . You had a prospect to meet with everyone . Did it sense like you ’re joining a well - rumple family ?

Yeah , utterly ! In my initial episode , I recorded a few at home , and I know a lot of folks did , but we nonplus in the studio for at least a few episodes . One session I call up , Billy West , Maurice LaMarche , and Lauren Tom were there , and getting to record with them . Seeing Billy basically spill to himself like three dissimilar characters , like it ’ll , you do n’t go through what is , it ’s just a existent kickshaw .

I ’m sure he had a fictional character or two to spare that he did n’t beware delegate , right ?

Yeah [ laugh ] decent . For certain .
