Laid Showrunners Nahnatchka Khan & Sally Bradford McKenna on How Star Stephanie Hsu Brings the Peacock Series to Life
Bleeding Cool : What was your takeout from the Australian adaptation of ' Laid ' when you started developing the series for Peacock ?
Khan : [ Sally and I ] both binged it , and we sleep together it . They did such a great chore and wanted to impart it forward into 2024 and like take a sight of the elements they did so well , like all its awkward humor , and uncomfortable tone , and keep it going .
Were there elements from the original serial you felt were not translated to the American translation ? What changes did you make to secern more from the Peacock series ?
Khan : The element we wanted to enhance were the fucked up rom - com of it all and have Ruby be a short more narcissistic , a little less self - aware , and want to reach this romance that she ’s only seen in movies and television but does n’t exist . So , we ’re bring that onwards a little mo more . Those were the elements that keep the deaths snuff it . Have the demise be more shocking and surprising , and continue in the serial publication .
How did the cast come about ? Was there any gift already pencil in from the get - go ?
Bradford McKenna : No , we ’d already had the archetype written when we started . When this started becoming real , Stephanie Hsu was number one on our list from the originative and executive side . We were so excited at even the hypothesis she might do this . When we get word she was in it , we were thrilled . She ’s been unbelievable from the root . She ’s also an EP on the show , so she ’s been priceless with writing , production , and post .
Can you address of the chemistry between Stephanie and Zosia and why they work so well together ?
Khan : That ’s such a huge question stain . We have no idea how that happen because they had never adjoin before . We all met on Zoom for the first meter , so we watched them meet , and they right away clicked . When we develop them in the same way , like they had that energy with each other , we ’re like , " These people have known each other for the longest time . " All these little things we had that we were work to try out , " It ’s like you guys have been estimable friend for a prospicient time ! " We did n’t need any of that because they had this physicality and the way they interacted with each other . It ’s on them , and they ’re such great performers . We get golden .
Has there been any convergence creatively as far as the story with the original Australian version of the show with the Peacock series ? Has there been any potential longsighted - full term plans Peacock want to expand beyond the ambit of that macrocosm since the original serial only ran for two seasons ?
Bradford McKenna : We desire so . There was clobber from the original we were like , " We need to replicate and quicken this , tweak and heighten it , and do more with certain things they did . " The pilot playscript , particularly , was the closest to their fender , plot - impertinent . We operate from there and sealed thing they had in the first season perchance would be like a little prank , and we would turn into more of an instalment or a cliffhanger . [ Laid ] time of year one ends in a place where we leave ourselves very candid for another time of year .
Khan : We also have a twist in the heart of our season , one that is unexampled , leading us into a season two that is dramatically dissimilar . Beyond that , who have sex ? Season two , for sure , would be fun .
