Brent Spiner ( Star Trek : TNG ) hash out the Wheelers returning for this week ’s sequence of NBC ’s Night Court , Star Trek / AI , and much more .
BeforeBrent Spinerlanded his freehanded signature tune role as the beloved android , Data in the Star Trek dealership lead off withThe Next Generation , he played the Yugoslav yokel Bob Wheeler on NBC’sNight Courtduring its original run alongsideAnnie O’Donnell , who bring his spouse June Wheeler . While the two became pop on theReinhold Weegeseries , always finding themselves in cartoonish scenario but regain themselves in extreme misfortunate or incredible circumstances , much to the surprise of Dan Fielding ( John Larroquette ) , the dyad persevered . With the legacy continuation series fromDan Rubin , the Wheelers went from decorate Judge Harry Stone ’s ( Harry Anderson ) court to his girl , Judge Abby Stone ( Melissa Rauch ) , bringing their familiar hijinks along with their daughter , Carol Ann ( Kate Miccuci ) . Spiner verbalize to Bleeding Cool about his latest sequence , " A Few Good hen , " reuniting with O’Donnell and Larroquette , the miss opportunity not to share Star Trek cover prison term with both , how the piece of writing has n’t missed a dance step between the original and new series , if he feels humanity could handle the responsibleness of hokey intelligence , and if he ’s concerned in a Star Trek - led stage yield in the future .
Night Court: Brent Spiner on How Writing Always Exceeded His Expectations
Bleeding Cool : How did it feel to be capable to revisit ' Night Court ' and be able to infix Bob Wheeler to a fresh generation ?
It feels all right . It feels good . I always bask wreak Bob , and I ’m thrilled to be back play him with this wonderful cast that they put together , and Melissa Rauch lead . To be back working with John Larroquette , Wendie Malick , my spouse Annie O’Donnell , and my girl , Kate Micucci , it ’s been terrific .
How would you equate the writing from the original series to the current incarnation ?
I opine it ’s astonishingly interchangeable . These guys are really good , and with ' Night Court , ' it was always skilful . Reinhold Weege , who created the show , was a genius , and I was always stunned . We ’d come in on the first daytime , typical sitcom , you read through the book , and I thought , " Oh , this hand is funny ! I ’ve got some great lines , " and then you make out back the next daylight , they ’ve worked on the script , and all these things you make love are gone , but were supersede by stuff was even better . That ’s exactly what ’s come about on this [ embodiment ] . They ’ve really apprehend it and managed to keep the spirit and the quality of the original serial .
When you reunited with Annie and John , did you find like you guy picked up where you pass on off ?
I feel pretty much like that . It was like we ’d done it the day before . There was nothing odd or strange about it other than the fact that we were doing it again all those years later .
I was speaking to Annie from your previous coming into court on the series originally about how reuniting with you both lean into each other in the Paramount commissary when you were on ' TNG ' and she was invitee starring on DS9 . Did you ever wonder , since John also had his raid into Star Trek , that you , Annie , and John would shared the CRT screen on Star Trek together had the stars aligned and what that could have been ?
Well , yeah , is it too late ? I think we can still do it . In fact , that ’s a unspoilt idea ! I think I ’ll pitch that to the hoi polloi at Star Trek . Bring me , Annie , and John , together for an episode of Star Trek , but yeah , no , but for now , it ’s just wonderful to be with them doing ' Night Court . '
Do you have a favorite Wheelers ' moment from either the old or the current show ?
I do n’t have just a moment . I enjoyed the entire experience in both the original and this show have been so pleasurable to work on . The people , worker , and audience are terrific . It ’s just all been a joyfulness . I ca n’t really single out , a particular moment .
I wanted to shift gear , given that you ’ve play Data and Lore for nigh 40 years in the Star Trek franchise , and seeing the AI come around in substantial - prison term , do you feel that humans ’s relationship with AI presently , are we matured enough to handle the responsibility of its potential ?
No [ laughs ] . Do you ? I do n’t want to get political , but we do n’t seem mature enough to handle anything , much less hokey intelligence . I think mankind require to grow a little bit before they can really responsibly deal the force of AI and its potential . It ’s complicated , dangerous , and scary but stimulating and exciting all at the same clip . We need to develop up and handle it in a responsible way .
You all in the ' TNG ' cast have an extensive field of operations scope , and one of the thing you cat did that I always enjoyed was evoking Shakespeare . Did you ever think about reunify with the cast for a stage product ? It patently can go beyond the serial publication since there are so many across the franchise with similar theater backgrounds .
Yeah , that would be fantastical . I would make love to do a play with all of them or any of them . LeVar [ Burton ] and I have been prove to get a play on for a long prison term . During the ravel on ' Star Trek , ' we did a Tom Stoppard maneuver called ' Every Good male child merit Favor ' that Patrick ( Stewart ) conduct and play in . I was in it , Jonathan [ Frakes],Gates [ McFadden ] , and Colm Meaney was in it , and we would result on the weekends , take flight someplace , do two performances , and then fly back and do the show .
Night Court , which also starsLacretta , Nyambi Nyambi , andGary Anthony Williams , airs Tuesday on NBC.Star Trek : The Next Generationis available to pelt on Paramount+ .
