SNL 50 Rewind : A reckon back at how NBC ’s Saturday Night Live and host Bill Burr were the perfect post - U.S. election relief back in November .
Even though NBC’sSaturday Night LiveSeason 50 is on a break until most probably after the crowing anniversary event on Feb. 16th , that does n’t intend there is n’t a whole lot of SNL goodness out there to enjoy . From Peacock ’s in - depth four - part docuseries andQuestLove ’s amazing musical history example to the " SNL : 50 season in 50 Days " and more ( include the late announced anniversary concert at NYC ’s Radio City Music Hall ) . Even though we ’re getting re - public exposure until the new shows re-start , looking back on how this season has been going has been a real joy because SNL has brought its game big metre with Season 50 – the casting , writers , hosts , and musical guests are rent SNL rally a nostalgia undulation , proving itself to be as societally relevant today as it was when it first hit NBC screens . With that in thinker , in honor of tonight ’s re - airing of hostBill Burrand musical guestMk.gee ’s show from November 2024 – the first SNL after the U.S. POTUS election – I ’m passing along a smell back at our original review , making the case why Burr was the right host for that mo .
SNL Team, Bill Burr Trade Mourning for Mocking in Much-Needed Effort
After last Tuesday ’s election result , one matter was clean-cut . A whole lot of U.S. voters told Democracy , " It ’s you , not us , " and hop aright into bed with fascism . With the real incubus officially get afoot after what we ’re assuming will be a Kid Rock and Hulk Hogan - fronted first shindig in January , a whole luck of folks ( myself included ) were wondering how NBC’sSaturday Night Livewould respond this weekend ( with hostBill Burrand the amazingMk.geeas the musical guest ) . Would the cold undecided end up being a pitiful , depress televised wake ? Would SNL start transfer out from Trump and his like being satirical butt ? Based on the frigid surface , it appears SNL is n’t looking to exchange how it ’s doing thing anytime before long – and with Burr and Mk.gee in top form , SNL grant me exactly the show I needed at this point ( mileage may motley ) . Here ’s a rundown of what went down …
The " SNL for Trump " Cold Open kick off withBowen Yang , Ego Nwodim , Heidi Gardner , andKenan Thompsonin an understandably serious mode as they began making a statement about all of the criminal offense that Trump has receive away with over the year – before being joined byMarcello Hernandez , Sarah Sherman , andColin Jost(who made certain to throwMichael Cheunder the jalopy ) to " pledge their allegiance " to Trump ( and make example out of featured stamp membersAshley Padilla , Emil Wakim , andJane Wickline ) .
It was the perfect snarky " Fuck You " to anyone who thinks the long - run former - Nox sketch funniness and music serial would be rolling over anytime soon . Bonus point go toJames Austin Johnsonfor his " Sexy Trump " and toDana Carvey , who looked like he time - traveled back to his original run with his take on Elon Musk .
By the time Burr wrap his chess opening soliloquy , I could tell that it was definitely move to get a all-inclusive range of a function of reactions on social . It did . Much like his 2020 soliloquy , there was a lot I liked about Burr ’s monologue on Saturday night . That ’s not to say that there were n’t cringe moments – the " put-on " purpose at feminists was an unoriginal cheap shot that felt out of place with the rest of Burr ’s run . But there was also some heavy , cruel " reality sarcasm " being neglect by Burr that ’s being write off at face value , which is n’t fair , and those labeling Burr as " another Trump comedian " understandably did n’t heed to the intact monologue .
refer to Trump as " the orange bigot , " Burr went on to call him " a lunatic " and " not a reasonable human being " – adding this about the attempted assassination try on Trump : " I cogitate the phone number one reason Trump pull through is he ’s got all those herky - jerked meat movements he does . " Again , there was a whole wad to like about Burr ’s gap – and while I can understand that some parts of it may not have tally too well with some , it worked as a follow - up to the cold-blooded open .
Some Quick Sketch Thoughts…
" Rorschach Test " saw four fire fighter ( Burr , Hernández , Wakim , andAndrew Dismukes ) taking a psychological test , with Burr doing a great job as the one who is decidedly realize much more than " butterfly " and " two multitude kiss " ( and a caboodle of spectator having their spiritedness fetich fed into ) . While " Sex Rock CD " does a great job of noting the perplexing sexuality going on in and around the 80s hair metal band creation , it ’s all of the sport that Sherman , Dismukes , and Johnson are having as fancied band Snake Skin that steals the sketch ( yes , we need an real " lost album " of theirs to be unearthed ) . " The Janitor " was an excellent vitrine forMichael Longfellow , as we get a look at a " Good Will run " situation from the custodial perspective .
" Calling Dad " ascertain two friends ( Dismukes andDevon Walker ) call their dads ( Burr , Thompson ) in an effort to connect . It was a nice effort , but it did n’t murder enough on either a comedic or aroused degree . And since we ’re let the cat out of the bag about sketches that did n’t quite work for me , " Trauma Support Group " was amazingly dissatisfactory considering the lineup ( Burr , Johnson , Yang , Wickline , Padilla , and Wakim ) , but it felt like it was being made up as it went along and left me feeling annoyed for some rationality .
But the " Buffalo Wild Wings " filmed sketch was sea wolf , show up the difference between NFL fans and actual Patriots fan Sean ( Burr ) in a commercial for the popular flank eating place chain . I ’ve rewatched it twice , with the beatdown between Sean and his son ( Mikey Day ) the biggest highlight for all of the toppingly wrong ( yet still hysterical ) reasons . solar day and Sherman helped go under up " Bald Guys " nicely , and based on social media reaction shortly after , it seems like a lot of bald-pated cat out there feel seen – and have a new composition birdsong . In my previous life , I used to have to attend office dinner party parties , holiday party , and other incarnate - draw socialising . With that PTSD still in looseness , " I Got One " hit home because there are so many people at those things who are on the nose like Padilla ’s character . They ’re suspicious , goddammit – and they ’re proceed to keep being funny until you find them funny , too .
Of course , we ’re not give way to blank out " Weekend Update , " with Thompson ’s Willie ( Che ’s now no longer neighbor ) trying to witness the bright side of everything – include the late election results . Nwodim ’s adult female Who Ca n’t Find Something in Her Purse checked in with Jost to offer some advice on active listening . Thompson and Nwodim are SNL gold , and these segments just added to that fact . But WU was all about Jost and Che this hebdomad , with the duet playing " in force keystone / high-risk keystone " this week . While Jost went with the news - focused satirical knife - spin , Che drank while call out some brutish truths about how matter went down with the election – and that back - and - off workedperfectly .
