Dave Francois always looking for new challenges as an artist , whether it’sacting , composition , or directing . His latest project is Amazon Prime Video’sSomebody I Used to Know , his 2nd directorial feature to follow up 2020’sThe Rental , which became an unexpected passion project with his married woman , actorAlison Brie , who ’s also done her part of piece of writing and directing . Brie plays Ally , a metier personality and workaholic who ’s on a head trip to her hometown and reconnected with her X , Sean ( Jay Ellis ) , and starts to question everything about the mortal she ’s become . Things only get more perplexing when she encounter Cassidy ( Kiersey Clemons ) , who reminds her of the mortal she used to be . Franco spoke to Bleeding Cool about his and Brie ’s creative process and how acting helps his directing , casting , and organically grow the drollery .
Bringing the Elements' Somebody I Used to Know' Together
Bleeding Cool : What ’s the inspiration behind ' Somebody I Used to Know?‘Franco : The inspiration is my married woman and I do it romanticistic comedies and want to put our own version of that out in the world . We started writing it at the start of the COVID lockdown . We wanted to kind of put some positivity out into the human race during that dingy fourth dimension .
What makes Alison such a great collaborator in your projects? We’ve worked together in a crew of unlike ways now . This is the first clock time we ’ve actually compose together . We have similar sensibility . We seldom have like wildly different point of eyeshot about anything . For the most part , it ’s moderately seamless . Our factual writing process is fundamentally me at the computer typewrite away and her tempo back and off and me enjoin , " All right , what would you say in this scenario ? " She ’s literally act it out as I take down her words . It ’s a sport back - and - Forth River in that direction .
How does being an histrion aid you in your directing?A lot , first be intimate how to tattle to actors , be intimate kind of what their mindset is , being on set , and knowing how vulnerable it is to be an actor . I love create a safe space for histrion to get them feel comfortable taking full-grown swings and all of that . On top of that , I remember the first flick I address . I had brass go in because I had never done it before , but that first twenty-four hour period on set , I felt like , " Oh , I know a lot more than I thought I did because I ’ve been on so many sets as an actor . " It made me suppose about many first - time conductor where when they step on set that first day , this is their first meter on any set ever . They ’re trying to figure out how things generally shape . I get a overnice step up , having been on so many set .
What was the most invaluable lesson when you decided to step behind the television camera that help carry you through your projects? The secure lesson was to surround myself with talented people and overnice , hardworking people . It ’s so authoritative because it put the whole tone for everything . Everyone feeds off that damaging energy , even if you have one tough ejaculate . I did n’t need any part of that . I extensively vetted the cast and crew to verify that they were all authentically nice people . It makes it , so the whole experience is like , " We want to do good work , but we also want to have a serious meter . "
How did the cast come together ? Was it a premix of friend in the industriousness and some you had audition ? How did Kiersey and Jay go into the picture?Part of the process was friend come up on board . Danny Pudi has worked with Alison on ' residential district ' ; they ’re best friends . We write the persona [ of Benny ] specifically for him . We were so excited that he wanted to do it . It was of import because their natural chemical science is so apparent you ca n’t fake it . They ’re playing good admirer in the picture . You just want that to fall through .
In general , out of the main cast , we did n’t audition anyone . I have n’t try out anyone for either of my movies regarding the main cast . I make lists of masses who I be intimate and consider in . I ’ve seen their past work and find they can do this purpose exceptionally well . I do n’t need them to go through the strain and dance of doing multiple auditions . It was more about us reaching out and sending letters to these actors who were buff and telling them how much we would love to work with them . We got lucky that we got our first option across the board .
What ’s the most unmanageable part about balancing the clowning and keeping the nature of the story grounded? The fashion of humor in this movie is grapheme and situational - based as opposed to throwing out a crew of one - liners or stuff like that . When it is part found , it makes it a little easier to sail back and forth between the more serious and the more comedic moments , whatever office you ’re in throughout the film . You ’re playing the honesty of that minute , whether it ends up being funny or serious again , like the choice is a type of film where it ’s like , " All right , let ’s just confound out a million joke , and some of them might be like a niggling intensify above world , " but that ’s what this movie is . It ’s supposed to be a cockamamy , uncivilized , good prison term . With ours , the most important thing was keeping everything as ground as potential and let some humor come from these bizarre situations and characters .
Somebody I Used to get it on , which also starsHaley Joel Osment , Julie Hagerty , andAmy Sedaris , is available onPrime Videoon February 10th .
