Always eager to get word and teach , Dudkowski became one of the hard - mould editors in Hollywood , even directing three episodes of his favorite franchise withDiscovery . He speak to Bleeding Cool about a variety of subjects , from which world would he like to revisit , his study with the pre - MCUAnthony and Joe Russo , how he describes the humor of the upcomingStarfleet Academy , why music has become one of his greatest joys in editing , his one pet peeve about Star Trek , and his current Paramount+ seriesHappy Face .
Bleeding Cool : You knead on so many dissimilar franchises over the twelvemonth . You already named a few , like ' Buffy , ' and I want to include ' The Umbrella Academy , ' ' Clarice , ' and ' The Man of the High Castle . ' Was there a world you wish you spent more time in ?
Comedy . I lie with science fable , but the last heavy drollery show I did was ( Showtime ’s ) ' Roadies , ' which was fun because I ’ve been a Cameron Crowe rooter my whole liveliness , and figure out with J.J. Abrams is fun , too . I always get excited when I get to do drollery . I care to think I ’ve convey some skill at it . At the start of my vocation as an editor program ( 2007 ) , I worked with Joe and Anthony Russo on the ( ABC ) show ' Carpoolers , ' which was fun . Around that head , the strike happened , and I float out into science fiction , and I ’ve been in that world , and I make love it , but I ’m just as passionate about comedy . I have it away take view and dig out for joke , and I do a lot of independent poppycock for friends . I ’m always athirst for cutting comedy . There ’s something fun and gratify about it . Given most of my piece of work take place on a starship , there ’s not as much comedy . I will say and I do n’t think I ’m talk out of round here , it ’s not a drollery ( by definition ) , but there is more clowning in it .
The new series I ’m working on ' Starfleet Academy ' has it has some great comedic moment . The untried cadet and their Department of Energy . It ’s got a piddling bit of that ' Buffy ' give-and-take and play where every week something insane is happen , and they ’re seem at each other and going , " Is this happening ? ! Did you see what just happened down the hallway ? ! Oh , my God ! " It ’s singular , and I savor that . The other matter with ' Roadies ' that I enjoyed was the heaps of music . I lie with music and finding the right song . ' The Umbrella Academy ' was so much playfulness because [ showrunner ] Steve [ Blackman ] came in with these great melodic ideas , and Pete [ Hoar ] , the director , also had such brilliant ideas , but we got to play with the medicine . My one issue with Star Trek has always been since it takes place so far in the future , you do n’t have schematic you do n’t have contemporaneous music . You ca n’t put a kickass stone song , hip - record hop , K - pop , or whatever it is ; it does n’t belong to , and that is the one thing . When I step aside from Star Trek and do other things , it ’s always satisfy . It ’s almost like stepping out into fresh air to get to use full contemporary medicine because you get stick in a box in Star Trek .
What can you tell me about your upcoming body of work in ' Happy Face ? '
' Happy look ' is amazing ! That was my first time working with King Size Productions . Jen [ Cacicio ] and Liz [ Glotzter ] were the two executive that I worked on the most , and it ’s a coolheaded show . It is so dark . I have n’t done anything that blue since ' Fringe , ' but it ’s dark in an interesting psychological way . It ’s a horror storey about a consecutive orca , the impact the serial orca has on their mob , and it ’s so wise . I just wrapped the close of their first time of year , and I came off so impressed by the caliber of the writing , acting , and sophistry of the movie maker .
I was like , " Wow , this is so smart ! " People are going to have intercourse the show . The barometer I often use is my wife ’s auntie hold up in Bucks County , Pennsylvania . She ’s in her LXX and watches a hatful of television . She ’s smart and has a long professional career . She ’s commence her daughter and her husband . There ’s a reason Bucks County is like that spot in America where all the political campaigns go to campaign . She ’s correctly in that utter centerfield of daddy culture zeitgeist , and then her girl . and her grandkids are part of the zeitgeist in a lot of way . ' Happy Face ' is a show that is going to hit the zeitgeist . It ’s so smart and blot on . I ’m excited for people to watch over that one .
