Bleeding Cool : You had such a wide variety of oeuvre , but the resources may not always be the same . Did you chance yourself in a situation in a undertaking where you had to scrounge whatever you could because resources were n’t there , or was it something you made work count what ?
I try my out-and-out adept to execute the sight of my director , but there have been times in the past where I ’ve had to say " No " because we but can not accomplish that due to the time that we ’re given . Here ’s a fun one , I was shooting a undertaking in Dubai years ago , and we had one of our performing artist in this part call in " Old Dubai , " and the building there are ancient . We had one of our guys , an unbelievably gifted in parkour , but they ’re parkouring over these building , and one had to jumpstart off one of the buildings .
The idea was that he lands on the earth , flap out , and keeps lead . Well , we ’re in Dubai , we do n’t have , like , we ’re not bring our pad kit over . We get there and see what we have available . I ’m like , " Okay , we ’ll establish out a box catcher . " Usually , you ’re fuck off your boxes and you design them in a sure fashion for your performing artist to be able to shoot down in them and they crush into it safely . composition board box in Dubai are not the same as what they have here [ in America ] . These were like five - ply boxful , and by the fourth dimension we had work up up probably about 10 - foot - high boxes , it was a wooden program . He jumped onto it and landed on his pes . That was it , they did n’t undermine in at all [ laugh ] . That was a fun one , getting over there , and realize these are the resources we have , and we ’ll make the best of it .
I looked at the stunts that Jackie Chan performed over time and realized it was a miracle that he was still alive today . James , I want to give thanks you for your time , valet de chambre . Did you have any bits from ' The Bondsman ' that were your favorites ?
I enjoyed the submerged sequence . I also liked the initiative sequence to introduce Kevin Bacon ’s character , Hub , which was fell . I do it the whole bees segment there , and obviously , you ca n’t habituate real bee , but your imagination , right ?
That took so long , because there was an actual … we’re in this hotel down somewhere in Georgia , down to the south . It was a working motel , and we had to basically have them off the actual air conditioning unit so Kevin could get the damn bee ' nest in there . That was the biggest battle to get that stupid thing in through the opening . That sequence was fun .
I ’m proud of my boy Thomas [ Watson ] because of the scattergun he exact to the back . Our rig team on that was Justin Woods and Loren Dennis ; I had to tell them it ’s one of the things with shotgun blasts in film . For doing a conducting wire twist , if you keep tautness on the line and you deplume somebody , there ’s a little bit of a lead - up to the pull . I was like , " Thomas , I hate to do this to you , but this is a shotgun . It ’s got to take you down quick . " I was like , " We ’re going to leave a little bit of drop-off in the line , so when they snap it , it ’s just go to pull you . " We did about two or three , and valet de chambre , it looked like it snatched the soulfulness out of that young man every time , but he never complain once . He is a true stuntman . Kid ’s a slayer .
I ’m surprised you ’re able to gibe Kevin inside that wallboard . At his age , are you reckon to deform like that ?
That whole affair , we just did it . That was the little chassis that we had on the stage . They basically had a little bulwark , and we were able to just kind of wheel it in and get it tight and plastered until Kevin essentially was like , " I ’m serious . That ’s wet enough " [ laughs ] . There was only one clock time when Kevin really got upset . I recall this was when he was chained up on the workbench and Lucky [ Damon Herriman ] was torturing him . He ’s a guitar player , and on one of the takes , it was a foam hammer . It ’s soft , but if you hit somebody hard enough , you ’ll find it . Damon hit him with the foam , and Kevin was like , " I ’m done . Saving my digits , I diddle guitar . " That ’s when we end up take in to bring Thomas in to get his fingers smashed .
