The Last of Us S02E01 : " Future day " mother us into the action , inaugurate us to new faces while play up Joel and Ellie ’s demons .

The Last of UscreatorsCraig MazinandNeil Druckmannhad the daunting chore of setting up season two from Naughty Dog ’s video game of the same name as we start to seePart IIunfold . consider the HBO series is look to stretch the timeline of the game across multiple season , there are tons of opportunities for expounding ahead , and we start by meeting Abby ( Kaitlyn Dever ) , who we find oneself is more consumed by rage than sorrow after the events of the time of year one finale that found Joel ( Pedro Pascal ) killing all the Fireflies at the hospital where Ellie ( Bella Ramsey ) was set to have disastrous surgery before saving her with his rampage . The Last of Us: Establishing Joel’s More Miserable Present and Ellie’s Brighter Future

Before the possibility credit , we have a recap of Ellie involve Joel if he ’s being fair about what take place back at the hospital and Joel lying about her delivery , blame their escape . As we fast forwards five geezerhood afterwards , we go to Jackson , Wyoming , as the two settle on their life alongside Joel ’s buddy Tommy ( Gabriel Luna ) and wife , Maria ( Rutina Wesley ) , facing the difficulty of running an enclosed community with the daily battle scavenging for new supply , replenishing what they can from their lifelike resourcefulness , and being overwhelmed by the increase demand from new survivor that make their direction to their town to join their rank .

" Future Days " certainly contrasts with the original series premier episode , " When You ’re Lost in the duskiness , " in set up that new normal . Joel obtain himself in a familiar position where he remain emotionally remote follow the loss of his daughter , but unlike the premier episode , his guilt trip lives in another home as a young grownup woman with a chipping on her berm to be self - sufficient without Joel ’s constant sleepless eye , harboring bitterness .

As we progress in the story , the tension is there , and it gets dragged like an 800 - lb elephant in the room that the local Jacksonians just admit exists without any explanation . Even when Joel literally spells out his problem to his healer ( Catherine O’Hara ) , it feels a bit empty because it ’s exhaustively going to draw . As much as we get the other figures involved , much of the " Future Days " is about make how Joel and Ellie both require to feel functionally utilitarian . For Joel , it ’s seek to respect Ellie ’s blank space and not fall into his onetime habit . For Ellie , it ’s about earning the regard of her match without having Joel ’s interference fare into play somehow .

We also get to know two of the outstanding residents in Dina ( Isabela Merced ) and Jesse ( Young Mazino ) . As fans of the game will palpate the intimate beat , we see how much Dina gets involved in both Joel and Ellie ’s lives , reaching them in a way others do n’t . She becomes a refreshing presence since both main character remain in their angst to the tip where it would draw most stories down . Those concerned we ’ll only get buildup wo n’t be disappointed because Mazin , who directed the episode , give way us plenty of human - on - fungal activity as Ellie becomes more skilful in taking out the infected but still lacks matureness , patience and a huge chip on her shoulder to not make herself a liability .

away from the Joel - Ellie angst you may cut with a butter knife and the welcome mien of Merced ’s Dina , you also have a bright spot in O’Hara , who is a second of a tour de military unit around Pascal ’s Joel as Gail , his psychologist . Bearing her fangs with cynicism and dullness , it ’s the most big scene - chewing - worthy scene of the episode . I also need to accredit Mazin for not doing the tinny jolt death of the week we see so often in the revelatory musical genre . It ’s one thing to just randomly shoot , but there are far too many incident where poor judgment results in a cartoonish type of kill from the horde .

" Future Days " is a great start to season two ofThe Last of Us . We have some beautiful vista from O’Hara , Merced , and Ramsey . We also get more recreated plot import in the episode , like the practice scene between Luna and Ramsey . It feel affecting to see how well Pascal plays the wounded father because you may tell how much his character had to repress his emotion and how much his ongoing PTSD is catching up to him . We ’re also seeing how far along Ramsey has emerged in growing as Ellie as a series lead without Pascal . You ’re ensure shades of them embracing to take that opening .
