How Julia Stiles Successfully “Captained” Her Way Through “Wish You Were Here”

Bleeding Cool : A two - part interrogation : Did you consider inserting yourself in the moving picture to fag multiple hats ? How did Kelsey and Jennifer get involve ?

I worked with Kelsey Grammer on ' The God Committee ' ( 2021 ) , and we did n’t have trailers . We had dressing rooms or sometimes cubicles . In our downtime , I would hear him singing opera house , and I also loved him . He was such a ravisher , and I wanted him to play the pa in [ ' Wish You Were Here ' ] , but I had this memory in ' The God Committee ' where he would be practicing opera , and he had the most amazing interpreter . He was practicing for a footrace of ' Man of La Mancha ' in London after that , which I saw , and he was phenomenal ! When he said he would play the part of the pa , I was like , I must write a scene where he ’s tattle .

Jennifer Grey is an picture . I needed an actress who would be hugely memorable as the female parent and not just a trope but a offbeat , unique person , and she embodied that . I spoke to her over Zoom , and she jazz the script . I remember she say to me because we were talk about how exhilarating it is to do something that you ’ve wanted to do for so long , but how scary it can be . She said this one thing I took with me every daytime on set , which is like , " I ’ve been waiting for this undulation for my whole life as if you ’re a surfer diving into a undulation . "

As far as appearing in the film myself , there was n’t a part for me , and I do n’t understand how directors organize themselves . I was excited to step behind the tv camera . There was lecture of me doing a cameo for playfulness , and I had a scene in the restaurant where I wrote that I was peradventure going to toy one of the vexing client , but ultimately , I feel like it would be distracting and take you out of the story , so I resolve not to be in it . Then I thought I ’d be an extra in the background like Alfred Hitchcock , but that also experience distract , so we did n’t do that .

What was your most hard scene to film ?

Practically ?

As far as provision and execution .

The first appointment was probably the most difficult in terms of provision because I needed to show their affair and connexion , but I did n’t want to shoot a sexual urge scene because I detest watching them and I detest being in them . I thought about it , which forced me to cerebrate , " What am I prove to show here ? " I ’m prove to show people grow closer or connecting , so that became what it is in the picture . Also , filming on a sailing boat was hard , and that take a lot of planning because logistically , you ’re filming on satellite and a boat that ’s moving , shoot another boat that ’s move with safety boats around you .

I remember fetch up it , and we had a draw of plan behind it . I had to shot - list the snake pit out of it because everybody else is expect at your injection list , and there ’s no room for improvising . At the end of the motion-picture photography , the sun ’s going down . We dumbfound everything I wanted , we ’re coming into port , and I ’m on a boat with like ten big beefy dudes , the prophylactic guy cable , my camera operator , and first aid . I was like , " Whoa ! I was the maitre d' of that ship ! " It was so exciting .
