Wish You Were Here Stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Mena Massoud, and Gabby Kono-Abdy on Making Sure Julia Stiles’s Directorial Feature Debut Was Successful
Bleeding Cool : What fascinate you about ' Wish You Were Here ? ' Were you intimate with Renee ’s novel before getting cast?Kono - Abdy : I fall in love with the book back in 2016 . It was an unbelievable fib that resonate with me so profoundly , so find my direction of bringing this book to life story on the grownup screen was like my mission . I ’m so happy eight years later , we ’re here , celebrating , and the existence come to see it .
Fuhrman : Julia offered the part to me after we worked on ' Orphan : First Kill . ' She mail me the script and said she wanted me to read it and reckon play Charlotte . She hoped that by working together with this movie , people could see me in a different brightness in this role and in the way of life she got to know me , and I apprize that , so it was a no - brainer for me . It ’s such a beautiful chronicle about love and Julia being the person to direct it .
Massoud : These films are n’t made that often , so when I read the book and bed Julia was directing it , I wanted to be imply . Julia has such a rich history of doing this music genre , so to have her be the director , I knew I would learn so much by being involved . It was a fantastic decision , and I hope everybody loves this film .
Isabelle , you ’ve worked with Julia as a co - headliner , but since she ’s behind the camera and adapted the script as director for ' Wish You Were Here , ' how do you feel you both bond ? Did she show similar first step and leadership on solidifying when you were film the ' Orphan ' prequel ?
Fuhrman : I feel like Julia , as an actress , has a lot of certainty as to who this character is that she ’s playing . She is decisive and knowing with her choices ; I feel that was the same get-up-and-go she had as a director . You ’re managing so many more thing when you ’re a director , and she was antic at manage the set but also finding clock time to act with us as Adam , Charlotte , and Helen and incur newfangled things we could kind of mine from the script to the moment . I just experience like it was so clean-cut she recognize this genre , not just the story , and she was very intentional with the choices she made , from casting to our line in the script to any sort of airplane propeller or costume . It was beautiful to watch her step into that . She ’s like a born leader , in truth .
Do you feel Julia provide a alone vantage in terms of how she handles her set as an histrion - turned - director in her feature article first appearance ?
Kono - Abdy : you’re able to tell that after the years of experience and expertise that Julia has as an thespian in this film . She ’s probably had the chance to bring with a bunch of dissimilar types of director , so bringing what she have a go at it versus what perchance did n’t put to work for her as an thespian , and we ’re the beneficiaries of that experience and that breeding 20 - plus year .
apart from the characters in the volume , did you pull in from personal experiences from Quaker and household to instigate your performance ?
Fuhrman : I would say in sure facet , like my grandmother . My mom and I were her elemental caregiver for about two years , and hold upkeep of somebody who require help but also does n’t require to ask for it , does n’t know how to ask for it , or even still is insubordinate to it is backbreaking to live your life , be independent , and then one day need so much help . I resonated with the later and more acute panorama between Adam and Charlotte , and what it entail to take care of somebody at that meter is unconditional passion . It ’s hard for Adam to accept that somebody still wants to be there when somebody like Charlotte wants to be there with him while he ’s in that place . I mat like that was something I had experienced in my own life story before go into spend a penny this celluloid . It was worked up because of that , but I also interpret the other side of it .
Massoud : Yeah , I ’ve sure gone through moment in my living where you must take things that you ca n’t command , and you palpate powerless because there ’s something happening you ca n’t control , and you so badly want it to be dissimilar . You so badly desire it to be something else , but it ’s something that ’s outside of your ascendency . How do you assume that ? How do you try on to live in the bit and be present , and make the most out of a shitty situation ? That ’s something we all go through , and that ’s also one of the messages of the moving picture .
Kono - Abdy : On a light note , the willingness and receptiveness to fall in love with someone so quickly and easily , as Helen does with Roddy ( Josh Caras ) , really hit me because that was my experience with my husband . I recollect it all plays together , right ?
