Bleeding Cool : What intrigued you about ' Young Werther ? '
What intrigued me , I found the handwriting top-notch fun . I have it off the idea of flirt this role . He had a lot of characteristics and sensibilities I had n’t played before , allowing me to liberate my internal child . I also wish the melodic theme of playing this intellectual , but someone who comes from this inner background signal , but hide certain insecurity . He ’s probably never been hugged by his female parent , wears his heart on his arm , falls heading over cad in love with a girl who ’s already take , and the untidiness that comes with that .
Before you took on the role , did you read Goethe ’s ' The Sorrows of Young Werther ? '
I had n’t read it before , but I have sex about it since it ’s a very famous record from back in the 18th 100 . It was a superstar in Europe . Some people were also in heartbreak , copying Werther ’s action at the ending of the book , not to give anything off . Napoleon [ Bonaparte ] carry it into battle and trim back it over his nitty-gritty , holding it there for it to represent his lovemaking for Josephine . It ’s illustrious and it ’s a great story , but the motif of love , Passion of Christ , grief , individuality , unreciprocated love , all these thing as relevant today as now , our director , did a witty , fun , modern retelling of the write up .
How did you find about his updates and how it was execute ?
I enjoyed it . He weaved [ the update ] it interestingly , and he ’s quite a quirky guy cable . I loved the way he take it to life .
What ’s it like act upon with Alison and how do you both develop interpersonal chemistry as you did with Werther and Charlotte ?
It was cracking . She ’s one of the finest actors out there . She ’s so undecomposed at everything she does . She ’s also from Toronto and show me around . We pass time in the parks and restaurants , getting to hump each other , building that chemistry , and learning how to waltz together , which as you could imagine when you ’ve just run into someone , is a good way to break the shabu . It was great . She ’s a wondrous role player !
What would you say is your favorite scene to film ?
Favorite succession to the flick … it sound so simple , but there was this moment when Werther and Charlotte held hands and ran down the street together . There was something about draw together full of joy . We were having so much fun , filled with that joy , and Werther was excited he get down to hold her hand . contain hand and run is one of those sexual things one can do . That was , for whatever reason , quite fun , banging into people , running , and inject this going - to beautiful shot . That was my preferent moment .
Did you have an liaison coordinator on set for those familiar single , like the clothes scene ?
Most productions now have that intimacy coordinator and talk over the panorama and the like . If my memory serve correctly , it was over a class ago now . On that day , Alison and I determine we did n’t finger like we ask one for that , but they were always useable to talk .
What can you say about yourcostarss like Jauhar [ Ben Ayed ] , Patrick [ J. Adams],Scott [ Thompson ] , and Iris [ Apatow ] , and what they brought ?
Patrick did so well . It ’s a hard part , so it ’s gruelling to come in and play that straight guy , doing it fabulously . It was also my favorite minute during production with our relationship together as Werther and Albert . When we go shooting together , it ’s risible ; he ’s so uncoiled , and I ’m just so silly .
Iris is an rank joy as well . Scott Thompson is funny and a go legend in Canada . Jauhar , I have a big spot in my heart for him . He ’s such a lovable guy , and we quickly adopted each other as good buddies . He ’s slimly more reserved as a person , and he ’s more outgoing than [ his character ] Paul . He ’s not like that , and I ’m a snatch more gregarious , so it work together . We had a good , fun clock time going out , having dinner party , and get drunk together [ laughs ] .
I would watch a prequel or sequel with you two guy , like having it off because that picture show spell itself mighty there , right ?
After filming , we fly to Berlin and went on vacation with the two of us anyway , and some cinch of us doing that were taken . You never know ; there could be a sequel , ' Werther and Paul Do Europe . '
What is the big lesson you ’ve learn about yourself while playing Werther ?
Be liberal to play , and do n’t venerate a gumption of play . To throw ideas out there , trust your conductor and hope they ’ve have your back . It ’s a challenge when you ’re playing a character that could well slip into being teasing or unlikeable , and it ’s about that human relationship to direct it and make certain you ’re observe it on the right side of " charming and likeable . "
Has this experience helped shape your thought about interpersonal relationships ?
Not really . I ’m a fairly undefended guy , maybe " Do n’t get some very wizardly guy move into your business firm . He ’s preoccupied with your wife [ laughs ] because he may try and log Z’s with her . " But no , it has n’t made me lift my interpersonal relationships .
